Recently, if I am honest, I have had a massive knock in confidence in my ability to do this whole ultra running thing. Since I came back from the UK, I have either not had the motivation to do a run or have not had the belief that I can do the run. A major issue with a massive race in less than four weeks away. I have searched for motivation, and when I have found it, I get hit with being ill. It has been a struggle to say the least. I do wonder whether this lack of confidence steps from recent events or whether it goes back to when I broke my arm. I feel that this may have something to do with it also.
On Saturday, I ran up to High West and started to walk down the ridge line and found a rock and sat there. Sat staring at the clouds. Staring at the boats and ships floating in the sea. Stared at the buses making their way around Pok Fu Lam. Stared at Lamma Island wondering what people were doing. I cleared my mind. I cleared it of the doubt. I cleared it of the negative thoughts that have been creeping through. As I did, I listened to this:

I think I’ll just leave that thought there – let’s just say that I am more motivated than ever before. I have a dream and I need to reach it. In fact, it’s not that I need to; it’s I will.

On Monday night, I was stressing. I had lost a chest strap off my S-Lab bag – the one I need for STY. After testing it out with one – it was clear this was not going to be ideal. So I posted on Trail Running HK – a fantastic group with over 3000 members. Luckily, Philip – whom I have met a few times – mentioned that he has a spare bag. So Tuesday night I met with him and he passed me his whole bag! Not just the strap. I can’t thank him enough for this. So now my S-Lab has three chest straps. No bounce at all! Can’t get over how kind people are in the Trail / Ultra community. Just blows me away all the time!

Wednesday – Short and Sweet: Testing the Terraclaw on wet concrete
Decided to go for a run in the Terraclaw 250’s. It had been raining for a few days so was just planning to go up to High West. After running for around 15 minutes and slipping all over the shop, decided to call it a day. Just wasn’t feeling it and the grip wasn’t great on the concrete. I still feel like these are the right shoe for UTMF STY but we will see. Will do a long run at the weekend in the New Balance 1210’s and see how they do. Hard call to make.

Thursday –Twins not staring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito
Decided to run this route with my full Salomon S-Lab 12 pack with all the gear for UTMF STY. Was a good plan.
Starting from the Wong Nai Chung Reservoir, bypassed Violet Hill to follow the Tsz Lo Lan Shan path instead. Never ran this route so was happy that it was relatively flat but slightly technical in places. Felt good and got to the bottom of the Twins in good time. Then the Twins. Bloody tough. Tried to keep a decent pace but just died very quickly. Combination of heat, humidity and a heavy pack. Good to do but need to do this route more often. Overheated quickly and slowed right down.

Vertical – 347m but felt like 3000m

So after a morning at work, my plan was a late evening run in the cool. The weather was pretty toasty and the sky was clear. Hot in other words. I got in. Sat down. Chilled and then saw…
So off I went. Using a new top secret product that we are hoping to stock at Gone Running. I powered up the Morning Trail and then hit High West. Determined to try and catch up with Nic. I didn’t realise just how well I was doing (for me).
To say I am bloody happy is an understatement. Got to the top of High West and… Nic had already gone. Nevermind. Still bloody happy with this. Seriously chuffed.

So looks like my last week of hard training before potentially doing the Hong Kong 100 will be in Sydney! Can’twait to attend a friends wedding and get some runs in! Woo hoo!
Sunday – TMS, MHC, WWRKBD
A tough day out in the hills. Decided to do the last 15km of the hk100. Probably some of the best bits but a lot of vertical. Felt good over the first half but as I climbed Leadmine pAss to Tai Mo Shan, started to overheat. Usually I would stop and give up, today just slowed down.
Shoes were great till the descents – feet started slipping and banging the toes on the front. Will need to sort this out if using again.

1 scoop of hemp power
Half a bar of protein based chocolate bar

Anyway, although it is an interesting shade of green, it tastes pretty good
